GRINDROD HOUSE
RED ROCK, WIGAN

Designed in 1964, this was the first of four building projects commissioned by Michael and Helen Grindrod QC. A spatially interesting house, it included internal balconies that could accommodate social gatherings. A national brick shortage at the time resulted in the use of very old handmade bricks from a demolished local barn. The plan included a dramatic circular staircase clad in black stained timber boards of different thicknesses. The initial sketch ideas shown here formed the basis for the design.
